Our Story

Our founders are Danielle Kim and Danielle Shi (yes, they have the same name). They are both seniors at the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, NJ. While their interests lie in quite different fields, both students are passionate about empowering youth through education.

During the pandemic in 2020, as all learning transitioned online, the two girls independently recognized a critical issue: the lack of readily accessible education for many students. This period of remote learning highlighted the stark digital divide affecting students from less privileged backgrounds, a divide they knew they were fortunate enough not to experience.

They realized that not everyone had the same access to resources and educational opportunities that they did. Their experiences during this time were a wake-up call, inspiring them to take action and give back to the community.

It was this shared understanding and desire to make a difference that eventually brought them together. Since 2020, both students have constantly researched and led efforts to increase educational equity, eventually leading to The Enlighten Project’s official incorporation in 2023.

As high school students, they are keenly aware of the challenges that many students, particularly those from underprivileged and minority communities, face in accessing quality education. They are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to the educational tools and support they need to succeed. And they believe that the best way to do so is to provide heavily researched, personalized support.

This orgnization, therefore, is not just about providing technological resources and tutoring; it's about leveling the educational playing field and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience an enriching educational journey, much like the one they have been fortunate to have at their high school. Through their meticulous efforts, they aim to bridge the gap and create a more equitable educational landscape. One where every student, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has the chance to thrive.
