Initiative I:

Chongqing

At Taiji Town Central School in a rural district of Chongqing, Grade 7 Class 1's 27 students face challenges that are hard to imagine. These children, 20 boys and 7 girls, come from underprivileged rural backgrounds. Many have been left behind by their parents, bearing not just the weight of economic hardships but also a profound lack of companionship and emotional support.

Initiative 1: Chongqing is a focused initiative by The Enlighten Project to support these young, resilient learners. Our efforts are directed towards making a tangible difference in the lives of these students, helping to lift some of the burdens they carry every day.

Our campaign aimed to provide these students with essential educational and recreational supplies, including backpacks, sports equipment like badminton and ping-pong rackets, basketballs, and bicycles, as well as winter accessories such as scarves and gloves. Beyond material support, we are committed to their academic and personal growth. This includes organizing English teaching sessions and establishing a companionship program virtually, where students are paired with Mandarin-speaking volunteers from our network for regular guidance and companionship, fostering both their educational development and emotional well-being. Please find more information below:

  • English Teaching Session (for the entire class): You will join our team of English tutors and help us develop lesson plans to teach the entire class. We will meet every other week on Zoom to teach the class.

  • Companionship Program (one-on-one): You will be paired with a student and become their online companion. You will be responsible for video calling them once a month (at minimum) where you and your student will chat, share aspects of your lives, play games, watch movies, and more. What you do during the call is up to you!

From January 15th to February 15th of 2024, we raised $870 through various fundraising efforts, including community events and appeals to corporate donors. The funds helped to provide educational and recreational supplies to these students!

We invite you to be part of this meaningful journey through volunteering for tutoring! Your involvement can be a transformative force in these students' lives.
